In an effort to select endorsments for the upcoming City Council election, BBC invited prospective city council members to respond to a five question survey. BBC will evaluate the positions held by candidates during the next monthly meeting on Monday, February 7th. Below are the candidates responses.

Suzy Ageton

Jill McFadden

Suzy Ageton

Have you supported bicycling in the past? If so, how?

I have supported bicycling and all forms of alternative travel through my support for the City transportation sales tax. I have also supported the emphasis in the Transportation Master Plan on completing a grid-based system of primary and secondary bicycle corridors to provide bicycle access to all major destinations and all parts of the community.

In the last year what kind of cycling have you done?

Unfortunately, an injury prevents me from enjoying cycling anymore.

Generally speaking, to what extent should the city promote and facilitate bicycle use for transportation? Current level, less or more?

I believe that the City should continue to facilitate bicycle use. We already have an active, recreation-minded public and should seek to find new ways to support their use of bicycles and all forms of alternative transportation. At a minimum, we should maintain our current level of promotion, and there may be times such as when the Transit Village comes on line that we will want to increase our efforts to stimulate bicycling

Will you support ongoing efforts to upgrade our major arterial streets to provide on-street bike lanes in addition to shared-use sidewalks or paths on both sides of the street? Why or why not?

In general, I am in favor of upgrading our major arterial streets to provide for bike lanes. I am especially pleased about the proposed 17 th street upgrade for bikes, and think this will greatly enhance bike traffic across town and around the University and Boulder High School .

Who is endorsing you?

At the moment, I have no organizational endorsements. However, I have a number of endorsements from active, respected Boulder residents such as Leslie Durgin, Josie and Rollie Heath, Deanne Butterfield, Jean and Frank Dubofsky, Benita Duran, Jane Butcher, Linda Shoemaker and Steve Brett.

Jim Martin

I often bike to work when I work in Boulder when the weather permits. I helped start the Bicycle Classic with the Boulder Rotary.

I run between 50-60 miles a week. I bike maybe 25 miles. My wife and daughters have done many of the Ride the Rockies . My son in-law Hank Poole was on a professional team for 5 years.

The city needs to promote bicycle a lot more. When I was in China I saw how bicycle transportation can and should work. Business needs to provide more incentives for bicycle commuting not just the city!!

One reason I don't use my bike more is the lack of safety while using my bike in the city limits. We need to support aggressively the upgrading of our major streets. We should have bike lanes on both sides of the street where ever possible!!

I am being endorsed by the “people”!

Jill McFadden

Have you supported bicycling in the past? If so, how?

I have supported bicycling primarily by participating in it. I am a regular road biker and I thoroughly enjoy cycling around Boulder and in activities accross the state.

In the last year what kind of cycling have you done?

As I mentioned above I really enjoy road biking. I've done a little bit of mountain biking, but I've just found that I like road biking better.

Generally speaking, to what extent should the city
promote and facilitate bicycle use for transportation?
  Current level, less, or more?

I really think Boulder has some effective programs in terms of facilitating bicylce use for tranportation. Generally I would support the current level but always think we can continue to look for more effective solutions and improve on existing policies.

Will you support ongoing efforts to upgrade our major
arterial streets to provide on-street bike lanes in
addition to shared-use sidewalks or paths on both
sides of the street? Why or why not?

Generally speaking I would support ongoing efforts to upgrade major arteries. My only caveat is that I would want to consider each project individually and weigh the needs of all involved when coming to an effective decision.

          Who is endorsing you?

Lisa Morzel

1. Have you supported bicycling in the past? If so, how?
Yes, I have been an active supporter of bicycling being a bike commuter and enjoying riding my bike for pleasure. As a former council member for 8 years (1995-2003), I worked hard on getting bicycle and ped connections built throughout Boulder, I was the council's Greenways liaison while we were working on the Greenways master plan, and I worked hard on getting safe and clean bike lanes, paths, crosswalks, and improving our bicycle thoroughfares such as 4th street, 13th Street, and ore recently 17th street. I also worked hard to remove unsafe hazards such as man-hole covers in bike lanes and to improve the design of the gutter pan street interface. Also in project designs I worked to incorporate bicycle parking and parking to accommodate bike trailers. I also was a strong supporter of the Green bike program and getting bike racks on our busses. Much more needs and can be done.

2. In the last year what kind of cycling have you done?

I commute by bike and ride for fun on our city streets, paths, lanes and greenways. I generally ride every day.

3. Generally speaking, to what extent should the city promote and facilitate bicycle use for transportation?

The city sets the stage for bicycling to be safe and efficient and to be used as one important tool for alternative transportation. It is also important that the city regularly check and maintain in a timely manner our bike routes. In addition the city can incorporate bicycle parking into development plans.
Current level, less, or more?
Certainly not less. Given our current budget, we need to maintain what we have but the city could do more.

4. Will you support ongoing efforts to upgrade our major arterial streets to provide on-street bike lanes in
addition to shared-use sidewalks or paths on both
sides of the street? Why or why not?

In most places, absolutely. We must be careful to share the street and routes in a safe and respectful manner and there may be areas, such as the Pearl Street mall, where walking one's bike will have to do due to the amount of pedestrians and activity there and similar areas.

5. Who is endorsing you?

No formal organizations yet but in my two past successful bids for council I have proudly been endorsed by BBC, PLAN Boulder County, the Sierra Club, the Daily Camera, the Boulder Weekly, the Colorado Daily.
