BBC Questionnaire to Boulder City Council Candidates

Reasons to support 17th Street Bike Lanes
August 2004. The Boulder Bicycle Commuters supports the addition of the 17th Street bike lanes. We also support certain traffic calming methods to improve the street for both cyclists and pedestrians. Our position statement is rather long, but we felt it was necessary to address some neighborhood concerns and some common design mistakes.

Bike Nation: One view of the national bike summit
The League of American Bicyclists hosts the National Bike Summit (March 3-5, 2004) to bring together advocates as well as industry, transportation, and public health officials to learn about and discuss bicycling issues. It's bikes, bikes, bikes for three days! The scope of topics is wide and the tone is decidedly political.

World Affairs Conference Addresses “Asphalt Addiction”
Jeremy Harris stated that the internal combustion engine was the biggest mistake that the world ever made. He asks, “Can we survive? The impacts are staggering.” He went on to describe the litany of problems that automobiles cause, and lamented the destruction of bicycling in China. He noted that global warming is of particular concern to island nations.

Burley faces growing competition in child-hauler market
The 25-year-old company is an icon, known for being owned and managed by its 85 employees, and for putting the environment first in its manufacturing methods.

Boulder Brings Home the Gold for Bicycle Friendliness
The League of American Bicyclists kicks off National Bike Month TM by awarding 11 communities its prestigious Bicycle Friendly Community designation.  Among the communities receiving the League's Bicycle Friendly Community (BFC) designation, the standouts are Boulder, Colorado.

Winter Commuting Advice: Take it or Leave it
One day I'd ridden to work I spent 45 minutes in the evening waiting for a bus to show up in nearly stopped traffic created by about 4 inches of snow. I bid the folks I'd gotten to know at the bus stop good luck and returned to my bicycle just to see how it went.

17th St. bike lanes still up in the air
The public process for the 17th Street project has been delayed again, this time by several months. City staff is doing a very careful review of the project, partly in response to opposition from neighborhood residents and local businesses. Many of them object to the removal of about 35 to 41 parking spaces in order to make space for bike lanes.

Underpass signs going in
On January 11 I biked along the Boulder Creek Path from Eben Fine Park to 55th St. All the underpasses, except at Broadway, had blue-and-white signs labeling the crossing! Broadway had a plaque. There was also a blue-and-white sign on the Pearl Parkway underpass, near where the Goose Creek Path joins the Boulder Creek Path.

Council approves Transportation Master Plan without BBC's suggestions
City Council approved the current update to the city's Transportation Master Plan at its September 18 meeting without the changes to the bike and pedestrian project list that BBC had requested.

BBC ENDORSES CANDIDATES FOR CITY COUNCIL

(October 8, 2003) Boulder Bicycle Commuters (BBC), has chosen to endorse Crystal Gray, Shaun McGrath and Andy Schultheiss for City Council positions.

BBC SURVEY:
MULTI-USE PATHS ARE BIKERS' FAVORITE

After about a year of volunteer work, the results from last year's BBC survey have been compiled. A total of 580 completed paper surveys were collected during the summer of 2002 at Boulder bike stores, through Boulder Bicycle Commuters mailings, and at BBC tables at bicycle related events.

17th St Bike Lane Decision Delayed
The city project that may include installing bike lanes on 17th St. from Athens Ct. north is now scheduled to come before the Transportation Advisory Board (TAB) on Monday, December 8. The project was previously scheduled for TAB consideration in October, as announced in the last BBC newsletter, but was postponed.

ISSUE UPDATE: Bikes on Sidewalks
The process considering changes to the city's bicycle riding on sidewalks ordinance continues to move along.  Transportation staffers have held a total of five sessions for public input.  The Transportation Advisory Board heard status updates along with public comments at it's meetings on February 10th and April 14th.  The Downtown Management Commission also received an informational review and public comments at their April 7th meeting.

The Dangers of Sidepath Cycling
There are many studies showing that riding on sidewalks and multi-use paths paralleling streets is more dangerous than riding in the street, even on busy streets without bike lanes.  This is  attributed to dangers in crossing roads and driveways.  Car's can't see or often don't expect fast-moving traffic on sidepaths.  (I'm using the term "sidepath" to mean a sidewalk or multi-use path paralleling a road).

Thursday Evening Cruiser Rides
Originated many years ago by the folks at the Sports Garage, this weekly evening ride around town has become its own event.  Many weeks with halfway good weather see 50 or more riders show up and some of the largest gatherings of past seasons have gone over the 100 rider mark.  Folks are mostly riding cruiser type bikes though anyone on any kind of bike is welcome to join in.  There are typically a few teenagers and a handful of us older folks, with the 20-35 or so age bracket making up the bulk of the group.  Customized or decorated bikes are right at home; outrageous dress or costumes are applauded; bells, horns and other noisemakers are encouraged.
