Opinion: 17th St. bike lanes need you!
By Krista Nordback
Do you want to see bike lanes installed on 17th St? Boulder's transportation staff proposes installing them from Athens to Walnut without widening the street, fulfilling much of what BBC requested over a year ago. The 17th St. bike lanes are part of the city's Transportation Master Plan. However, if bicyclists don't make a vocal showing, it is doubtful that the lanes will be built, since the project involves removing 44 parking spaces .
This is the time for 17th St. bike lane supporters to make their voices heard. Tell the Downtown Management Commission that cyclists buy things too. I know I do! Tell the Transportation Advisory Board that bike lanes on 17th would encourage people to bicycle by providing a safe and important connection between the university and downtown Boulder. It's up to us to make this happen!
If you can't make it to the board meetings, you can still call, email or write letters to the boards' members. Their contact information can be reached from the city's website at http://www.ci.boulder.co.us/cmo/boards/bcroster.html.
