Underpass signs going in

By Rebekka Struik

On January 11 I biked along the Boulder Creek Path from Eben Fine Park to 55th St. All the underpasses, except at Broadway, had blue-and-white signs labeling the crossing! Broadway had a plaque. There was also a blue-and-white sign on the Pearl Parkway underpass, near where the Goose Creek Path joins the Boulder Creek Path.

Here is the story: In the summer of 2002, my sister from New Zealand visited me. She loved the many bike paths and the free small Boulder map given out by GO Boulder. But often she'd go under an underpass and not know where she was.

What followed were some requests to Marni Ratzel, city bike/ped coordinator, many hours of on-the-pavement legwork by BBC volunteers to document which of the over 60 multi-use path underpasses in the city were in need of signs, and discussion with the new city manager, Frank Bruno.

The results thus far are the Boulder Creek Path signs. It's unclear at this time when or whether underpass signs will be installed on other multi-use paths in the city. If you see more of the blue-and-white signs, please let me know.¨
